| Summary | The 2023 season at Jebel Moya will excavate new burials and habitation levels ranging from 2000 years ago to the late 6th millennium BCE, the latter being the first securely recorded Mesolithic occupation in the southern Gezira. The 2017 and 2019 seasons produced evidence of Neolithic burial activities, while the latest season (January 2022) has (i) confirmed the start of the occupation as the late 6th millennium BCE, (ii) yielded further Neolithic human remains, and (iii) also yielded a potentially earlier burial (subject to AMS dating). In the next season, excavations will centre on the west of the valley where all the phases are still present, and will include the excavation of two known in-situ human skeletons deposited in Neolithic and late 6th millennium BCE layers. The botanical, lithic, pottery and bioarchaeological remains will be analysed to continue addressing issues of health, identity, interconnectivity and lifestyle pathways for the Eastern Sahara/Sahel. Jebel Moya will thereby continue contributing to the emerging debate on alternative (pastoral) complexities – mobility, identity and interactions - within and beyond Africa. |
