Summary:
In 2015, a French archaeological mission, supported by Libyan, Italian, and BILNAS teams, began studying Cyrenaican funerary sculptures from 600 BC to AD 400. These marble and limestone works, including Greek half statues and Roman portraits, reflect local styles and Greco-Libyan culture, with unique inscriptions and faceless divinities. The study also addresses looting and illicit trafficking, revealing the sculptures as markers of criminal networks destroying cultural heritage. By adapting provenance research methods, the project has impacted the global antiquities market and heritage preservation, highlighting the urgent fight against trafficking.
