The British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies (BILNAS) is a UK registered charity. Since 1969 we have supported high quality research and been the only major British institution to have helped protect and nurture the culture and heritage of Libya and the wider Northern African region.

Although we receive a large part of our funding from the British Academy, your generous donations and membership subscriptions are essential for us to continue our events, publications, research, the digitisation and housing of our archive, as well as fieldwork. BILNAS also welcomes enquiries about opportunities to sponsor our activities and events. If you are an organisation with a presence in Libya or Northern Africa or interests in the heritage, culture and scholarship of the region, we would be delighted to hear from you to discuss opportunities to support our lectures, seminars, book launches, and other special events.

If you are a UK tax payer, please add Gift Aid to your contribution – you can download the form here. Through the Gift Aid scheme we can reclaim 25p for every £1 you give at no additional cost to you. If you pay tax at rates above 20% you will be able to use your donation to reduce your tax bill.

Legacy Gifts

Like many charitable institutions, BILNAS has always relied on the generosity and support of its membership, including legacies and bequests. Leaving a gift to BILNAS in your Will helps us to continue our important work to support and promote the heritage, history, and culture of Libya and Northern Africa. A gift of any amount or type will make a difference.

There are several ways that you can remember BILNAS in your Will, whether by leaving a specific sum of money (a pecuniary gift), a percentage of the residue of your estate (a residuary gift), or even a particular asset (a specific gift). Whatever type of gift you choose, it has the potential to make a real impact to BILNAS’s mission.

Remembering us in your Will can be very simple, by stating that you wish to leave a gift to BILNAS (UK Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) no. 1203646) and providing the details of what you want to gift. However, we recommend that you seek legal advice about the best way to do this.

Any gift to charity left in your Will is exempt from Inheritance Tax. In addition, if you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, you may benefit from a reduction in the Inheritance Tax rate owed, if you are liable. To learn more, please speak to your legal advisor.

Your gift may be anonymous or private, if you prefer. If you are happy for us to acknowledge your gift publicly, your gift will be remembered in our Bulletin, and if it goes to sponsor any particular event or activity.
