| Summary | A Celia Hensman Grant My project investigates the role of solidarity with Palestine in Algeria and France (1962-1982), and is particularly interested in how postcolonial ethnoreligious identities were influenced by the displacement and dispossession of Palestinians. To this end, the project would benefit immensely from a stay of approximately two months in Algeria, for several reasons: Archival research: I would like to visit the Archives Nationales d’Algérie, Algiers (ANA) - particularly the archives du Ministère aux Affaires Étrangères, Algiers (MAE) to consult documents related to the Palestinian question, foreign policy and Third Worldism more broadly. The Fonds Jean Sénac (1962-1973) at the Bibliothèque nationale in Algiers would also be a crucial source on how these ideas were manifested in civil society, particularly the entanglements of race, belonging, gender and sexuality in solidarity movements. I would equally like to complete shorter visits to the departmental archives of Constantine and Oran, both cities with unique histories of Muslim-Jewish coexistence, to investigate how Jewish absence in the postcolonial period is remembered, and how it is framed vis-a-vis Arabism and Zionism. Oral history: Particularly given the complexities in accessing certain archival collections in Algeria, I would also use this time to collect oral testimony of key activists and academics to enrich my source base. I hope to be affiliated with the Centre d’études maghrébines en Algérie who can further assist with any ethical or practical concerns specific to the local context. Language training: I would like to attend the Session intensive d'été in advanced Algerian Darija at the Glycines, from 30th June - 11th July 2024. I previously completed their intermediate course and this training would greatly strengthen my abilities and scope while completing archival and oral fieldwork. |
