| Summary | A Celia Hensman Grant This research project (tentatively titled ‘Fascist Rule and Oppression in North Africa: A Comparative Study of the Italian and French Empires at War, 1940-43’) focuses on 3 North African countries during World War Two: Algeria, Tunisia, Libya. I intend to analyze how fascism and war impacted colonial relations, informed imperial policies, and prompted anti-colonial resistance in French and Italian controlled North Africa. I adopt a comparative and trans-imperial approach that requires extensive archival research in various countries. I already conducted archival research in the UK, Italy, France, and Tunisia. Libya is unfortunately out of the picture for the moment due to secuirty concerns. The USA and Algeria would be the last two countries to visit. This visit to Algeria would be a key step towards the completion of the primary source research. In September 2024 I intend to take an intensive 2-week Standard Arabic course at Les Glycines center (https://www.glycines.org/les-cours-d-arabe/) and establish contact with Algerian scholars and archivists, as I did in Tunisia. In particular, I intend to visit the National Archives and National Library in Algiers. If possible, I would also like to visit the local archive in Constantine, since the former French Department of Constantine is at the centre of my research. 1 month is probably an over-optimistic estimate regarding timeline. If, after having conversations with scholars and archivists in Algiers, I realized that I would need extra time, I would consider extending my stay up to 2 extra months. |
